‘North Cyprus My Way/ Nordzypern auf meine Art – the new book by Heidi Trautmann – a book for travellers – in English and German

 Her essays and paintings with poems by local poets

 ‘North Cyprus My Way’ is the personal experience Heidi Trautmann has made on her literary walks through the island, with a view on people, their stories and daily life, on places, villages and cities, on nature and the sky and the sea. As she believes that writers and artists are the ones that present the soul of the country best, she has included poetry by Cypriot poets. The book is intended for the traveller coming to Cyprus and is therefore written in English and German. She received the authorization by the poets to translate their poems.

‘Nordzypern auf meine Art’ ist die persönliche Erfahrung, die Heidi Trautmann auf ihren literarischen Wanderungen über die Insel gemacht hat. Es ist ein Blick auf die Menschen, ihre Geschichten und ihr tägliches Leben; auf Orte, Dörfer und Städte, auf die Natur und den Himmel und das Meer. Da sie meint, dass es in erster Linie die Künstler und Dichter sind, die die Seele eines Volkes am besten darstellen, hat sie Gedichte von Poeten aus der Region aufgenommen.

Introduction by the author

The way travellers choose to make themselves acquainted with a country depends on the interests they have. You may be interested in relics of antiquity or in the traditional cuisine, or you may want to explore nature. If you are interested to meet the local people you will sit with them in cafés or have your hair cut or done at local “Kuaförs” and listen to their daily little problems. The best is a mixture of all, especially when you have come to live in a country, be it part-time or as a resident. I have chosen to explore this country I live in by talking to people, interviewing them, people of the art scene, literary people and of the performing arts. The results I have published in my book “Art and Creativity in North Cyprus”.

But that is not all, I thought, and I started to explore the atmosphere people live in, look into the small traditional ways, saunter through a city or village and observe the activities, carry them out myself, connect myself to the soil, pick my own olives and almonds, ask my Cypriot friends for tips and recipes, do it their way.

Cyprus, actually it is in the north of Cyprus that we live, offers an incredibly deep and wide field of culture and it does not stop developing, it changes all the time with better possibilities of education for the young, and change of life style, and all this combined with the typical way of the Mediterranean “Laisser faire”, the shrug of the shoulder, the gestures and mimicry, their poetry and their love for music. But also - between the lines – their sorrows and pain after 50 years of isolation first as a minority, then as a non-recognized young republic, their hopes and disillusions and their coping with it.

This is what my book is about.

Die Art, wie Reisende sich einem Land nähern, hängt von den Interessen ab, die sie leiten. Für manche mögen die Zeugen des Altertums aussagefähig sein, für andere die traditionelle Küche oder die Erlebnisse für Auge und Seele in der Natur.

Wenn Sie die hiesigen Menschen kennen lernen wollen, werden Sie mit ihnen in einem ihrer Cafés plaudern oder sich die Haare bei einem ‚Kuaför’ schneiden lassen und seinem Gedankenaustausch mit anderen Kunden lauschen. Am besten ist eine gute Mischung von allem, besonders für solche, die hier leben wollen, sei es als Teilzeit- oder Vollzeit-Resident.

Ich persönlich habe den Weg der Begegnung gewählt, um Zypern kennen zu lernen, das Gespräch mittels Interviews mit Menschen aus der Kunstszene, aus den Bereichen Literatur, Theater und Musik, die ich in meinem Buch „Art and Creativity in North Cyprus“ veröffentlicht habe. 

Das reicht jedoch nicht aus, dachte ich mir, und ich begann, die Atmosphäre der Umgebung, in der die Menschen leben, zu ergründen, mir von den kleinen traditionellen Gewohnheiten erzählen zu lassen, durch die Straßen einer Stadt oder eines Dorfes zu schlendern, dabei die Aktivitäten beobachtend.  So wie sie Kontakt aufnehmen mit der Krume sozusagen, die eigenen Oliven und Mandeln zu ernten nach den Rezepten und Ratschlägen meiner zypriotischen Freunde. Mich angleichen an ihre Lebensart.

Zypern, wir leben im nördlichen Teil der Insel, bietet den Reisenden – und ich meine hier Reisende und nicht Touristen – ein unglaublich tief und weit reichendes Kulturgut, und es hört nicht auf sich zu entwickeln, sich zu verändern mit immer weiterreichenden Möglichkeiten eines Wandels des Lebensstils und der Ausbildung für die Jugend; all dies in Verbindung mit dem typischen “Laisser faire” der Mittelmeerländer, dem Zucken der Schultern, den Gesten und der Mimik, mit ihrer Poesie und ihrer Liebe für Theater und Musik. Aber auch – zwischen den Zeilen gelesen – über ihre Sorgen und ihren Schmerz nach 50 Jahren Isolation, erst als Minorität und dann als nicht anerkannte Republik, ihre Hoffnungen und ihre Enttäuschungen und wie sie damit umgehen. 

Von all diesem handelt dieses Buch und dabei lasse ich unsere Poeten gleich mit zu Worte kommen.
