Book Launch and Exhibition at the Atatürk
Cultural Centre in Nicosia on October 21 until 25
By Heidi Trautmann
Kadir Kaba is a photographer, one of those
who have brought Cypriot art photography to a high level but has also
researched the history of Turkish Cypriot photography. With his books – see my website under Cyprus
Art News Nr. 33 and 450 – he has rendered a priceless service to Cypriot
culture and has created a substitute for a museum.
Kadir Kaba was born in Mora, Nicosia in
1947. Photography has been his hobby from childhood on. “I started working as
journalist and photographer for newspapers in London, but then I decided to
study photography at the Paddington College of Photography from 1978 to 1981,
because I wanted to know more and there is a lot to know about it. Take its
history: Early photography was between 1850 and 1900. Modern photography began in early 1900 with a first phase lasting until 1945 and
a second phase until 1978. These developments followed the general perception
of art, focusing on the inside and trying to find the soul, getting away from
copying what you saw in front of you. In the late ’70s and
early ’80s, a new philosophy in art emerged, post-modern art, and post-modern
photography.”
On the basis of his knowledge gained by his
studies, he started to research the art in his own country. On October 21,
Kadir Kaba will have his new book launched accompanied by a photo exhibition of
the photos contained in the book. Özgül
Ezgin, once his student in photography, is the curator of the event, and Nazif
Bozatli, a close friend, will introduce the book as moderator, I believe he
also did the translation of the book into English.
The book launch will be on Oct 21 at 19:00
hrs, the exhibition is open to the public until October 25 from 09:00 – 15:00
hrs at the Atatürk Cultural Centre in Nicosia.
