Each year on International Women’s Day, women are being honoured, women who have achieved something in their professional life, women take to the streets and fight for their rights, and on some occasions women are getting together from many different countries and work together; in our case it was 16 artists from nine different countries who met for ten days in Girne at the Public Library – see the list below.
It is for the fifth time that women meet on this level, invited by the Municipality of Girne with the support of the TRNC Cultural Dept. of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Etkilesimli Drama Association. The event was again organized and curated by Ipek Denizli Karagöz as all these five years. Please read under the link below about last year’s event.

Every year there are several presentations, lectures planned, also excursions done around the island. This year the curator had invited two honorary guest artists: Ismet Tatar and Emel Samioglu who are two of the four founding members of the local Cyprus Paper Art Association. Ismet Tatar, the current President of the Association did a presentation for the guests on paper art and on the educational work performed at schools and universities which was received with great interest.
With a separate presentation, the guest artists presented themselves and their art and – what was most touching and interesting – we learnt about the traditions and habits in the countries they lived in, the opportunities they had and the position as women.
On March 18, 2019, a final exhibition was held in Nicosia, in the Ismet Güney Art Centre with its beautiful atmosphere, which closes on March 22. There will be a second exhibition held in Girne in the Girne Municipality Art Gallery from April 01 – 10. Most artists had produced two art pieces, as paintings, collages or ceramic artworks. In her welcoming speech, the curator Ipek Denizli Karagöz voiced the hope that one day in the nearer future a museum may be won to house all the works of these International women workshops. We will see a new workshop for next year’s International Women’s Day
