One should not be fooled by the unassuming facade of St. George’s Anglican Church in the heart of Paris, close to the Arc de Triomphe and the Champs Elysées…..As the ‘Helping Hands V’ Project team embarked on its preparations to assist RSCM France organise the Spring event, a visit to the venue revealed much that would have remained secret if it were not for this recital taking place in the chic residential XVIth arondissement of Paris. As soon as one steps off the street and into this otherwise unremarkable building, one encounters a profoundly different, hushed and still atmosphere, in direct contrast to the busy city on its doorstep. The venue for the RSCM France Spring Recital on 29 April therefore provides a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the outside world.
Once inside the building one is enveloped by the reddish-brown brick walls and wide subtly lit stairs which wind their way down to the church’s interior. Here one is immediately struck by the warm golden brown, yellow, green and white tones of the cascading stained glass windows designed by Jacques Loir, which illuminate the perfection found in the solemn atmosphere of the semi-circular church, giving it a character all of its own and revealing the splendour of this sanctuary used for contemplation and worship.
This is the first time a ‘Helping Hands’ project has been involved in realising a classical music event in a church that is still used for Christian worship. Previous ‘Helping Hands’ events include those at the Bellapais Abbey in Kyrenia in northen Cyprus, the Bedestan in Nicosia, Cyprus, and St. John’s Smith Square in Westminster, London. St George’s Anglican Church still vibrates with the positive energy generated by its regular use as a worship space, and extra care is being taken to respect the sacredness of the church and its areas dedicated to silent prayer and quiet reflection.
For this recital, the piano will be placed in front of the church organ and the seats arranged in a semi-circle so as to ensure that the performer can be seen by everyone. The church’s soft lighting provides just the right ambience for what promises to be a memorable evening dedicated to a classical music piano recital, which is to be followed by a choice of food ; wine and soft drinks will also be served at the end of the performance making a perfect end to the evening’s entertainment. Donation baskets will be placed in various places around the church throughout the evening so that you may place your voluntary contributions or donations. The suggested donation is 15-20 euros, but whatever you are able to give will be warmly and gratefully received and will contribute to the work of RSCM France.

Ne vous laissez pas tromper par la façade sans prétentions de l’église anglicane Saint-Georges au cœur de Paris, près de l’Arc de Triomphe et des Champs-Elysées….l’équipe du projet ‘Helping Hands V’ a démarré son soutien de la manifestation culturelle de printemps de la RSCM France avec une visite de reconnaissance des lieux. Au cours de cette visite, les secrets de cette perle du chic XVIe arrondissement se sont révélés peu à peu. Dès que l’on quitte la rue, en entrant dans ce bâtiment autrement peu remarquable l’on se trouve dans une ambiance profondément différente, tranquille et silencieuse, ce qui présente un contraste total avec la grande ville à ses portes. Le Récital du 29 avril fournit ainsi la possibilité d’un répit opportun du tourbillon d’activité du monde à l’extérieur.
Une fois à l’intérieur du bâtiment l’on se trouve enveloppé de ses murs de brique brun rougeâtre, et l’allumage doux du large escalier qui descend jusqu’à l’église. Et là on est tout de suite frappé par les tons chaleureux des vitraux en brun doré, jaune, vert et blanc, crées par Jacques Loir et qui illuminent à perfection l’ambiance de cette église en hémicycle, lui conférant son caractère particulier et révélant en même temps la gloire de ce sanctuaire de contemplation et d’adoration.
C’est la première fois que ‘Helping Hands’ [ ‘La Main dans la main’] s’est impliquée dans la réalisation d’un événement dans une église qui sert toujours de lieu de culte ; d’autres manifestations culturelles animées par ‘Helping Hands’ comprennent celles qu’on montées à l’abbaye de Bellapais à Kyrenia (Chypre du nord), au Bedestan de Nicosie (Chypre) et à l’église St. John’s Smith Square à Londres (Angleterre). A la différence de ces derniers lieux, l’église anglicane Saint-Georges vibre encore de l’énergie positive générée par les gens qui assistent aux cultes réguliers qui y ont lieu, et La RSCM France et ‘Helping Hands’ travaillent avec le plus grand soin afin de respecter le caractère sacré de l’église, de cet endroit dédié à la prière et à la réflexion.
Pour ce récital le piano sera bien en évidence, les sièges disposés en demi-cercle pour que tout le monde puisse voir l’interprète. L’éclairage doux de l’église créera une ambiance idéale pour cette soirée de musique classique, suivie d’un cocktail, qui s’annonce mémorable. On vous invitera à contribuer à l’œuvre de l’association RSCM France au moyen d’un don : le montant suggéré est de 15 à 20 euros par personne, mais tout ce que vous pourrez donner sera reçu avec reconnaissance en tant que soutien à l’œuvre de l’association RSCM France.
