Nicholas Panayi "Mother Memory" - Seminar all day
Based on his seminar:
When Alzheimer’s strikes, life changes direction not only for the sick but for all the family. My mother has been for 10 years now, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. A process of gradual loss of memory and coordination of body functions including speech. This has deeply influenced the way I see life and has a direct impact on my work.
In the work “Mother Memory”, layers of transparent pigmentation interwoven on the canvas, form images of the face of my mother at different stages of her life – a young woman at the time of her engagement, a mother with her son, a little girl gazing at her future with uncertainty.
The uninterrupted background of figures in turmoil forms an allegory of the transition of time and also represents my response to her gradual loss of memory.
Eventually it is a silent dialog between me and mother, a dialog of mutual trust, understanding, compassion, care and love. A dialog spoken without words.
