In cooperation with the Pharos Arts Foundation, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus presents a concert by one of the leading ensembles for new music: Ensemble Modern.
The unique Ensemble Modern will open the 10th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival, and will present, among others, compositions by Evis Sammioutis and Vassos Nicolaou. In addition, works by Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Jörg Widmann will be performed, while the promising young Cypriot composer, Andreas Tsiartas, will have his world premiere.
Ensemble Modern, which is based in Frankfurt am Main, was founded in 1980, and is known for its unique way of working and organizing; in fact, the ensemble is without an artistic director that decides upon matters concerning its projects, co-productions and finances. The distinctive spectrum of their programme includes music theatre, dance and video projects, chamber music, and ensemble and orchestral concerts. Each year, the Ensemble Modern conducts tours and makes guest appearances, thus giving about 100 concerts annually at the world's most renowned festivals and venues - the Salzburg Festival, the Holland Festival, the Berliner Festspiele, Wigmore Hall, Cité de la Musique, Tokyo Wondersite, Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Elbphilharmonie, Cologne Philharmonic Hall and the Konzerthaus Berlin. Every year, the Ensemble Modern has around 20 world premieres and also creates approximately 70 new works through longstanding and close cooperations with composers.
