'Tis early practice only makes the master....thus think many parents and thus thought Semral Öztan when she opened
her students‘ ceramic exhibition at the Ismet Güney Art Centre last week. Semral
has her studio in Kücük Kaymakli where students of all ages get together to
learn the fascination of ceramic art as the most basic activity of the human
race.
When you are able to make your own dish and cup you
have learnt the first step for survival, the next step is to fill them which
you will be taught in school.
In this respect the
world has not changed, although researchers go on inventing the most
incredible, often useless things, the profession of a potter or ceramic artist
is still most present in the art scene and appreciated worldwide. Semral Öztan
is the President of the North Cypriot Ceramists’ Association and has for many
years taught the art in schools and on private basis.
