Uwe Timm was born 1940 in Hamburg. He studied philosophy and German Literature in Munich and Paris and lives in Munich since 1971 as a freelance author. In 2009 he was honoured with the prestigious Heinrich Boell Literature Prize. His book “In my brother's shadow” deals with the later found diary of his very much older brother Karl-Heinz, who as a member of the Waffen-SS was injured during the Second World War in the Ucraine, where he died in a field hospital in 1943. Main topics are obedience and resistence, conscience and moral dilemmas in wars.
