Chamber Music in the Bedesten on May 25, 2017
By Heidi Trautmann
The renowned German quartet, The Gerlis Ensemble (Violin, Viola, Cello and Oboe) is coming back to
Northern Cyprus this May on special request. We have had the pleasure to listen
to them last year in Bellapais and Bedesten; please read my review http://www.heiditrautmann.com/category.aspx?CID=5138661355#.WRE6Fml96Uk
This year their programme will include pieces by
Baumgarten, Arnold, Haydn and Crusell.
Carl Friedrich Baumgarten and Joseph Haydn were
contemporaries and met in London in 1792. Bernhard Crusell (1775-1833), was a
Scandinavian clarinetist and composer. Malcolm Arnold (1921 -2006) was knighted
for his services to music in 1993, he was also a very successful composer of film
music, such as the soundtrack for ‘Bridge over the River Kwai’.
The concert in the Bedesten on May 25, 2017 will begin at 20:30 hrs.

The Bedesten: This building has a long history spanning more than one
thousand years. It was originally built as a church in the sixth century, and
expanded and reconstructed between the 12th and 16th centuries. During the
period of Ottoman rule it was converted to a special covered market, called Bedesten. Since its
reopening after an extensive renovation in 2009 it is used as a cultural centre.
