Jan 10 - 20 "You are here" Studio Exhibition by Nilgün Güney's Art Group MorMavi at ATM Nicosia
1/3/2012

Invitation to the opening of the art exhibition on Jan 10 at 18:00 hrs at the Atatürk Cultural Centre in Nicosia.

The last exhibition Nilgün Güney held with her students was at her studio café The Witch's Cauldron and it was very good and impressive. I enjoyed seeing the works in which I could realise Nilgün's way of thinking about life in Cyprus, about feelings of the past and the future, about pain and happiness, desperation and hope, with one word about humanism.

It is not only to teach how to bring paint successfully onto the canvas, it is about discussing a project, permitting the group members to express their own feelings and share them with others.

BURADASINIZ

YOU ARE HERE

“You are here” is a studio exhibition put together by Group MorMavi working at the Atelier of Nilgun Guney. The group started its learning process with the concept of “Nicosia” which led to self-questioning and various debates. Stories and tales related to the city concept, as well as historical maps and engravings of Nicosia were researched and discussed among the group members to produce experimental art works using different techniques. Various meanings of the phrase -“You are here”- were analyzed together with the meaning of the city. This analysis consisted of a broad number of themes ranging from the location of Nicosia on the map, division of the city, cultural variations, feelings and philosophical meaning of existance. Group members who just started their training worked together with more experienced members to interpret the topic based on their individual learnings and opinions with which they created paintings, photographs and graphic work.

Resulting art works, titled “You are here”, will be exhibitied in Ataturk Cultural Center (AKM) at 18:00 on Tuesday, 10 January 2012. The exhibition can be visited until Friday, 20 January 2012 at public office hours.
