Creating
a garden on a piece of land that one owns is creating a world according to ones
dreams and needs, with the need for individuality, need for harmony with
nature, or even hand in hand with nature. It is putting oneself on the same
level with nature, linking oneself into the chain of nature.
This
is the prerequisite to create a garden like Hikmet Ulucam’s Garden in Lapta.
The guests who came to the annual happening were in awe, and seeing them going
down on their knees to admire the pieces of art in nature, showed me that they
do miss something in their life. Yes, I miss my garden too, to hear the birds
sing in the morning, to watch the spider knit her net, to listen to the
crickets orchestra and to watch grow what I have planted and cared for.
The
unbelievable variety of plants Hikmet has given the chance to grow, to grow and
multiply and carry blossoms and fruit, is a concentrated display of what nature
has to offer.
With
his exhibition of photos Hikmet shows us again the beauty of Cyprus. From his
house one has a most beautiful view of the coastal line.
I
found my thoughts confirmed with the words by the Mexican architect Luis Barragán…
"In the creation of a garden, the architect invites
the partnership of the Kingdom of Nature. In a beautiful garden the
majesty of nature is ever present, but it is nature reduced to human
proportions and thus transformed into the most efficient haven against the
aggressiveness of contemporary life."
- Luis Barragán, Mexico
