– black and white – relation between object and the rim of the paper, here
static, there movement, harmony of space, all with the same title, from the
same year 2014. The laws of architecture photography and graphic design. The
title says it all: all seventy photographic works lie on our daily routes, we
pass them every day, but we have hardly ever noticed them. The essence in focus,
the graphic and architectural elements brought forward.
It
reminds me of a story a teacher of architecture photography once gave me: One
day when he came into class he put an orange onto the table and told his
students to photograph it. The students answered: So what, it is only an orange!
The teacher answered: No, take it up, squeeze it, smell it, taste it, then put
it back and now photograph it!
Something
ordinary becomes art by concentrating all our senses on the object. It is about
our relationship to the things surrounding us. How close do we go and how much
time can we spend to learn to understand the simple but beautiful truth? To learn about a simple object under
different light conditions, to go down on our knees and be at the same level of
perhaps an insect, to select and research. The pattern we discover in water
caused by wind and light, the pattern of a mesh wire or those of cacti, There
is a graphic order in all the works.
Erdal
Aygenç was born in Hopa/Turkey in 1959. He is a
Lecturer in the Department of Graphic Design of the Faculty of Arts and Design
at the Near East University since 2006. He finished his Master Degree in 1986
and Proficiency in Art (Doctorate) in the Department of Graphic Design of the
Faculty of Fine Arts at the Hacettepe University in 1992. He published many
articles in the subject of Art and Design, presented papers in some symposia,
conducted the sessions, took part in the projects and the artistic workshops.
He conducted two personal exhibitions and participated in many national and
international exhibitions.
I was late to see the exhibition, it will close on December 8. The
exhibition was curated by the artist Oya Silbery and the event – as all the
events in the ArtRooms – was supported by Erbil Arkin. The Art Gallery ArtRooms
at The House has developed into the leading art gallery in North Cyprus, the
venue for contemporary art, organised by Oya Silbery very sensitively.
